Interview with Prop 1 Opponent Nick Contos

By • October 16, 2024

Idaho Dispatch had the opportunity to interview a proponent and opponent of Proposition 1.

This interview was with Nick Contos, the former Bonneville County Republican Central Committee Chairman. Contos has been an outspoken opponent against Prop 1 and done a debate and several interviews on the topic.

You can view Idaho Dispatch’s interview with Contos by clicking here or at the bottom of this article.

So, what does Prop 1 do exactly? Here is what is written on the long title:

“First, this measure would abolish Idaho’s party primaries. Under current law, political parties nominate candidates through primary elections in which party members vote for a candidate to represent the party in the general election.

The initiative creates a system where all candidates participate in a top-four primary and voters may vote on all candidates. The top four vote-earners for each office would advance to the general election. Candidates could list any affiliation on the ballot, but would not represent political parties, and need not be associated with the party they name.”

“Second, the measure would require a ranked-choice voting system for the general election. Under current law, voters may select one candidate for each office, and the candidate with the most votes wins. Under the ranked-choice voting system, voters rank candidates on the ballot in order of preference, but need not rank every candidate.

The votes are counted in successive rounds, and the candidate receiving the fewest votes in each round is eliminated. A vote for an eliminated candidate will transfer to the voter’s next-highest-ranked active candidate. The candidate with the most votes in the final round wins.”

  1. Hyrum Erickson encourages people to be dishonest by urging people to register as Republicans when the do NOT subscribe to Republican Platform.
Prop 1 perpetuates that by allowing candidates to declare themselves as Republicans or any other party when the have no affiliation with that party!
Thus voters will be more confused than ever and there will be NO VETTING of primary candidates and CRAP WILL HAPPEN!
DEFEND YOUR VOTE AND YOUR POCKET BOOK BY VOTING NO ON PROP 1!
IF passed, millions of taxpayers $$$$$$$ will be spent on lawyers and judges contesting Prop 1, not to mention buying software and hardware as the COMPUTER PROGRAM will decide who wins elections!

    1. Thank you! All we need is a few more patriots like you to take a couple minutes to voice their views.
Unfortunately, we have plenty of democrats in Idaho- they just choose to lie and claim to be republicans. Like Hyrum. Van Orden. Furhiman. Poletti. Wheeler.

  2. Thank God we have Mr. Contos, who’s able to clearly communicate why Prop 1 will ruin Idaho.
Prop one, written by leftists lawyers and backed by democrat $$$$$, is deliberately misleading, confusing, complicated- all to fool the masses of Idaho citizens that frankly….., are apathetic, ignorant media trusting lemmings. I lived in California for 65 years. I fully understand what this bullshit is. Idaho is ripe for the big $$$ leftists that are aggressively pushing Idaho the way of Oregon, Washington, Colorado etc. Thank God we have Moon, Labrador and a good % of others that speak out against this.
Thank you Idaho Dispatch- you’ve never let me down by bowing to $ & influence. True patriots.
