Gov. Little Praises Boise State for Canceling Volleyball Game Against San Jose Amid Transgender Controversy
By Greg Pruett • September 27, 2024Boise State University has forfeited a women’s volleyball match against San Jose State University.
The university announced the decision today, and Governor Brad Little praised BSU for making it. SJSU has a male player on its women’s volleyball team who identifies as a woman.
In a statement to Outkick, Boise State released the following statement:
“Boise State volleyball will not play its scheduled match at San José State on Saturday, Sept. 28. Per Mountain West Conference policy, the Conference will record the match as a forfeit and a loss for Boise State. The Broncos will next compete on Oct. 3 against Air Force.”
SJSU player Blaire Fleming is at the center of the controversy as other schools have either dropped matches against SJSU or are considering doing so. Southern Utah canceled it’s match on September 14th and the University of Wyoming was considering dropping its match on October 5th but has announced their match against SJSU will move forward.
All teams are part of the Mountain West Conference.
The National Collegiate Athletic Assocation released the following statement on the controversy:
“College sports are the premier stage for women’s sports in America and the NCAA members will continue to promote Title IX, make unprecedented investments in women’s sports and ensure fair competition for all student-athletes in all NCAA championships.”
Little, who signed the “Fairness in Women’s Sports Act” several years ago, which is currently being debated in the courts, said the following on X:
“I applaud @BoiseState for working within the spirit of my Executive Order, the Defending Women’s Sports Act. We need to ensure player safety for all of our female athletes and continue the fight for fairness in women’s sports.”
SJSU has not responded publicly to the controversy. The women’s volleyball team currently sits at 9 and 0 for the season with conference play just getting started.
