Breaking: BSU Women Defeat USU, Will They Forfeit Against SJSU Again?
By Greg Pruett • November 27, 2024Today, the Boise State Broncos women’s volleyball team defeated the Utah State Aggies in the Mountain West Conference tournament.
The big question Idahoans will be watching for is whether the BSU team forfeits against San Jose State University Spartans for the third time this season because of SJSU’s male player on their women’s team. This time, the BSU team’s season would end with the forfeit.
The courts have already said SJSU would be allowed to play in the tournament. The match against BSU is scheduled for Friday.
BSU did not say what the team would do before tonight’s victory if they faced the Spartans on Friday in a semi-final match. USU was also a school that had forfeited against SJSU, but with the loss against BSU, they will not have to make that decision.
Idaho State Senator-elect Christy Zito (R-Hammett) blasted the NCAA and the MWC for not preventing the situation, telling Idaho Dispatch,
“These young women should not be forced into this situation. We have Title IX for a reason. We need to protect women’s sports, and the NCAA and Mountain West should be ashamed for not standing up for these women who have done but work hard to play in the sport they love. They should not be forced to compete against a man.
AdvertisementThis will only stop when the players, coaches, fans, and others say ‘enough is enough.’ We cannot let women be erased.”
What do you believe BSU should do? Forfeit again or play the match?
