Boise Mayor Roasted Online for “Happy Holidays” Social Media Post

By • December 26, 2024

Boise Mayor Lauren Mclean was criticized for her post on social media on Christmas Day.

One of the biggest controversies surrounding Christmas every year is whether someone uses the phrase “Christmas” or “Happy Holidays.” Even Elon Musk got in on the debate when he posted this meme on X:

Christmas is a day for the world to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the primary figure in Christianity.

For decades, people have been fighting against what is often called “the war on Christmas.” The belief is that there is an exerted effort every year to erase Christ from the holiday as stores, TV shows, and political messages, usually from liberals, say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas.

In McLean’s post, which contains a video, she says,

“Happy Holidays, Boise”

With the written post is a short video where McLean does say Merry Christmas toward the end of the video. Here is where people are still taking issue with how she closed the video.

McLean says while she is closing out the video,

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Happy Holidays…”

Technically, Hanukah falls on Christmas Day this year, a rare occurrence. But even if it hadn’t, McLean would have closed out her video similarly. Her video is somewhat cringe-worthy; as usual, she is trying to appease everyone.

Here are some of the responses to McLean’s post, which you can find on either Facebook or X:

“Merry Christmas!!! Christ is King!!!” – Kara Mason

“I think you misspelled Merry Christmas.” – Hank Meninga

“It’s okay to wish people Merry Christmas. When it’s an Eid day for Muslims you don’t disrespect them by saying Happy Holiday so why can’t you say Merry Christmas?” – Maria

“Do you mean Merry Christmas?” – Bill

“It’s literally CHRISTMAS day. Wish is a Merry Christmas. This is so lame.” – Rita Toombs’

“Seriously? Are you that clueless? Or just straight evil? Merry Christmas Boise. May 2025 free us from this disfunction.” – Feral Freedom

Unfortunately, for the last comment there, Boise just re-elected McLean last year, so you’ve got a few more years before you can try and unseat her again.

What do you say? Is there a war on Christmas? Do you say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays when referencing Christmas?

  1. As much as I dislike this, “Merry Christmas” has faded away. Over the last few weeks, I have looked all over for a manger display, with Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus and the 3 Wise Men. I saw ZERO! But I saw inflatable dinosaurs, grinches, dogs, all wearing stocking caps and many Santas.
The only place left for a manger scene is at your church.
