Idaho Department of Agriculture: No More Hemp Products for Animals

By • November 2, 2022

The Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) has declared that animal feeds and remedies that contain hemp or are hemp-derived may no longer be sold by Idaho retailers.

A memorandum meant to provide an update on the regulatory status of hemp products was included with a letter that was sent to Idaho businesses in August of this year. The memo stated in part,

“Safe levels of hemp and hemp-derived products in animal feed have not yet been established in federal or state law. As such, these products are not approved feed ingredients and cannot be lawfully added to or incorporated into commercial feed. This includes feed, treats, and remedies intended for pets, livestock, or any other animal.”

The memo acknowledges that in the 2021 Regular Idaho Legislative Session, House Bill 126 was passed and signed into law. It explains that although that new law does create allowance for the licensed production and handling of hemp in Idaho,

“The new law did not legalize hemp in every setting or product type.”

The accompanying letter informed the Idaho business owners that all animal products containing hemp, or that are hemp-derived, must be pulled from shelves as of November 1, 2022. The letter warned,

“These products are not legal in Idaho, and if found on or after November 1, 2022, will be subject to a stop sale and further action from the department.”

The ISDA cited Idaho Code Chapter 27 in Title 25: Idaho Commercial Feed Law §25-2712(1):

25-2712.  PROHIBITED ACTS. Acts including, but not limited to, the following acts and the causing thereof within the state of Idaho are hereby prohibited:
(1)  The manufacture or distribution of any commercial feed that is adulterated or misbranded.
Heather Coon, owner of Canyon CBD in Nampa, told the Idaho Dispatch she has several concerns about this change.
“As a small business owner, of course I think about the way it could affect my business, but pet owners are not going to stop giving their animals CBD. I have already had dozens of people tell me that they will share their (human) CBD with their pets. This is my biggest concern, and I would not recommend doing this. Many human CBD products contain terpenes, and some terpenes can be extremely harmful, even deadly to animals. Before giving pets your own supply of CBD please know what is in it. Bottom line is, I do not want to see our animals sick because pet owners are desperate in providing them relief from anxiety, pain, inflammation, seizures, or any other reason for why they may have their pet on CBD to begin with.”

  1. Our politicians, government employees and the nat guard are a crime gang that makes the Mexican drug cartels seen like a first year Girl scout Troop.

  2. Idaho needs to be educated when it comes to hemp. Many still believe is it the same as pot and some of those are elected officials. What is really interesting are the other ingredients in some pet treats and food that will flat out kill the pet over a period of time. Think “made in China”.

    1. Educating Little would do zero to correct his thinking. He lacks the intellect to understand anything that most of us consider common sense. His primary thoughts are power, control, and greed. He (or his staff) pulled a super orchestrated move by giving out a rebate just in time for the election. That’s exactly what to expect from a RNO or liberal democrat to buy votes. It didn’t work on me! And now he (and his cronies at the Idaho Department of Agriculture) have made another power control that will alienate many Rural folks. Those folks should remember that on the 8th.

  3. Even if cows get a little “terpines”, so what, a cow has a ton of flesh and three stomachs to get through. If its enable to them, then its just one more food source for cattle. We are mostly a beef eating milk drinking country. Happy cows make happy food.

  4. We cant give hemp to animals, but every commercial break they tell you to go out and get jabbed. Idaho maybe red but its all rino’s and Tyrants pretending to fight for freedom

  5. But let’s allow corporations to mandate control of your human body! “Business rights” are Republican.
    That’s fascism.
And yes it is harming people, I see it with my own eyes.

  6. Free people do not need laws to use natural plant products. Slaves need laws to permit use of a plant. Idaho is falling off a cliff of authoritarianism and Republicans are responsible. If you keep voting for these incumbent relics of the past that cow-tow to fear to control you, then you deserve your servitude.
