Bill Would Move City Elections in Idaho To Even Years

By • March 10, 2021

A new bill has been introduced in the Idaho Legislature that would move city elections in Idaho to even years.

HB 319 was introduced Tuesday morning by Rep. Gayann DeMordaunt (R-Eagle) and Rep. Sage Dixon (R-Ponderay) in the House State Affairs Committee.

DeMordaunt told the committee during the introductory hearing that the goal of the bill was to increase voter participation in city elections. Additionally, DeMordaunt also said that cities would save money doing election during even years.

During her testimony, DeMordaunt also listed off a variety of statistics that she said showed the differences between “even year” elections which are the years the president, governor, legislators, and congressmen all take place. The statistics that she listed had a large disparity in voter turnout during the odd years when city elections take place.

No questions were posed to DeMordaunt during the introductory hearing. She told the committee that if the bill receives a full public hearing that she would be happy to share the research she had on moving city elections to the same year as other major elections.

A public hearing for the bill has not yet been scheduled.
