Sen. Crapo Adds Pro-Gun Measure to Big Beautiful Bill

By • June 16, 2025

While H.R. 1—nicknamed the Big Beautiful Bill—has passed the U.S. House, it has yet to clear the Senate.

What’s Happening: Senators are currently working through potential amendments and reconciliations. One notable addition: Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID) has now included the SHORT Act in the legislation.

Many gun owners had pushed for the inclusion of the SHORT Act, which would remove short-barreled rifles and shotguns from the National Firearms Act (NFA). This builds on existing provisions in H.R. 1 that already seek to remove suppressors from the NFA.

Gun control advocates say that the SHORT Act and Hearing Protection Act will make Americans less safe.

Digging Deeper: Senators Crapo and Jim Risch have previously co-sponsored similar legislation to deregulate suppressors under the NFA. Crapo currently serves as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, positioning him to influence key aspects of the bill’s trajectory.

  1. A a combat veteran that has to wear hearing aids and I have severe neuroglial damage and I need to use SBR’s to enjoy the sport of shooting, I can’t wait until they remove both the SBR’s and suppressors from NFA.

  2. of great concern in this budget is the AI section also – very dystopian (NOT beautiful) Technocity here we come; where owning guns will not be allowed at all

  3. I think Idaho has a number of supressor manufacturers too. The reasons for banning short barrels were always dubious to begin with.

  4. I would first say good for them. I’m not sure why we hardly ever see a Idaho politician standing up and being noticed.
