Saint Maries School District: Our Staff are Armed

By • April 16, 2025

The Saint Maries School Board has voted 4 to 0 to allow teachers to carry concealed weapons on school grounds.

What’s Happening: The Idaho legislature has failed to pass a school carry bill allowing teachers to carry firearms to protect themselves and students. Several school districts in Idaho have paved the way for their teachers to carry firearms, sending a message to would-be shooters that the school is no longer a soft target.

Digging Deeper: The legislature has made several attempts at school carry legislation, but the bills continue to stall in committee. More moderate Republican lawmakers have tried to add sideboards and regulations that gun groups have rebuked.

One school carry bill was so burdensome that even gun control groups like Moms Demand Action came out in favor of it. Rather than letting teachers who want to carry a firearm and already carry it in other public places defend themselves, some lawmakers, like Senate State Affairs Chairman Jim Guthrie (R-McCammon), try to make it impossible.
