Pocatello GOP Representative Faces Accusations of Being a “Leftist Democrat”
By Greg Pruett • April 8, 2025James Lamborn, a challenger to Pocatello Republican Representative Rick Cheatum, is calling the lawmaker a “leftist Democrat” as he launches a campaign to oust him.
What’s Happening: With the 2025 Idaho legislative session finally completed, some lawmakers are already drawing challengers for the 2026 May primary. In Idaho, there is often very little time to take a break from campaigning.
Lamborn blasted Cheatum in a statement to Idaho Dispatch about his campaign, saying,
“I am running for State House because one look at Rick Cheatum’s voting record removes any and all doubt that he is a Progressive, Leftist Democrat (in Republican garb). And one look at Rick Cheatum’s Campaign Finance Report removes any and all doubt that he is a Corporate, AstroTurf Installment (no grassroots Conservative). I represent authentic GOP families and individuals; Cheatum represents liberal companies and woke special interests.”
Digging Deeper: Cheatum did not do himself any favors in the eyes of conservatives in 2026. Not only is his Idaho Freedom Foundation score a lowly F (43%), but Cheatum was also only one of two Republicans in the House to vote against a pro-gun bill. Cheatum sided with Democrats fairly often on the House floor.
Idaho Dispatch contacted Cheatum, but we have not received a reply at this time.

We want true conservative and freedom fighters. We don’t want those against border security, against homeschooling or school choices, or against removing porn like materials from our libraries. We need strong and godly men and women. I’m thankful for James and his wife Misty.
James Lamborn is a solid conservative with guts and conviction. He will be a superb state representative.
