Lt. Governor Janice McGeachin Announces She is Running for Governor

By • May 19, 2021

2022 is shaping up to be a big year in Idaho elections.

With the 2020 census completed, the Idaho legislature is working on redrawing the legislative district lines. In theory, that will all be completed before the primary elections occur in May of next year.

Lt. Governor Janice McGeachin (R) also announced today that she will challenge Governor Brad Little (R) during the 2022 Republican primary.

McGeachin and Little were at odds over several decisions Little had made last year regarding COVID-19 and the “Stay-At-Home” order issued by Little.

McGeachin criticized little for using the term “essential” versus “non-essential” jobs last year. McGeachin argued that all jobs were essential to those working them and that it was not the government’s job to say otherwise.

McGeachin said in part of her letter to Little,

A dark narrative is emerging on social media that if you are a non-essential worker than you are not important. All employees are essential. Employees who have thought that they are not at risk, including teachers and state and local employees are all at risk of losing their job if our economy were to collapse. The use of this language only seeks to divide us and not unite us. It was not the intent of the federal government to decide what jobs or industries should be shut down. Why is it the intent of state government to do so? We must respect the rights of individuals acting within the market to balance health and safety with their other needs. That’s how we determine what is truly essential.

McGeachin announced her run for the governorship at the Downtown Event Center in Idaho Falls this morning. She is also scheduled to speak at the capitol this afternoon and in Coeur d’Alene this evening.

At the event in Idaho Falls, McGeachin said some of the following quotes during her speech. Please note that the following quotes are taken from throughout McGeachin’s speech. She told Idaho Dispatch she would provide a full copy later on:

I’m here to tell you that every life is essential and every job is essential.

What we have seen over the last year is unacceptable.

I refuse to stand by and allow these abuses to go unchallenged.

That’s why I am running to be your next governor for the state of Idaho.

With your support, I will be the first woman to lead Idaho as governor.

Everything that makes Idaho great is under assault.

McGeachin made the following post on her Facebook page regarding the times and locations of each event:

McGeachin now makes the second challenger to Little with the recent announcement from Ed Humphreys, who is also running.

  1. We are out of town or we would be there with flags a’flyin’. We are definitely going to support the Lt. Gov’s political aspirations. God bless Idaho. God bless America.

  2. Idaho’s Ron De Santis (Floriday Gov) and Kristi Noem (S. Dakota Gov) rolled into one! Thank you, Madam Lt. Governor/Gubernatorial Candidate. Prayers answered……

  3. Governor Little has not been bad enough to justify challenging him. I haven’t agreed with everything he’s done, but for the most part he’s been good enough. At the very worst, he is the “evil that we know,” and that outweighs the evil we don’t. Challenging the governor comes across as being power hungry – not content to be merely Lt. Gov, she wants to be actual Gov. I think Little’s humility shines brighter than McGeachin’s narcissism.

    1. I don’t agree with you. McGeachin is a true conservative patriot. Little is a RINO on most issues and does not represent the majority of people in our state with their true conservative values.

  4. Janice McGeachin is a woman of courage and will be direct in her statements. I so appreciate someone who has enough respect for the listener to be honest and straightforward.
The current governor has done some good things that I appreciate but the day that he went down to Gowen Field a year ago to announce all the covid restrictions on the citizens of our state showed his true colors. As he stood next to the military brass in uniform, he would not answer the reporters’ questions if the military would use force on our people. He would not be clear that the level of force on our people would not escalate up to violence against the people. His or rather his non-answer, made it seem that violence against us was not off the table for him.
