Kohberger Accepts Plea Deal, Avoids Death Penalty
By Greg Pruett • June 30, 2025Bryan Kohberger, the man accused of killing four University of Idaho students in 2022, has accepted a plea deal that will spare him the death penalty. The agreement, confirmed by multiple sources, comes just weeks before his trial was set to begin.
Kohberger, 30, will plead guilty to all charges and serve four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. The plea deal was reportedly presented to victims’ families over the weekend, sparking outrage from some who say they were blindsided by the decision.
“The introduction of this plea deal, just weeks before the scheduled trial, is both shocking and cruel,” said Aubrie Goncalves, sister of victim Kaylee Goncalves. The family has publicly criticized the Latah County Prosecutor’s Office for what they describe as a lack of transparency and communication.
Kohberger was arrested in December 2022, six weeks after the fatal stabbings of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin in their off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho. DNA evidence reportedly linked him to the crime scene.
A court hearing to formalize the plea is scheduled for July 2 in Boise.
