Interview with Medical Cannabis Advocate Sgt. Jeremy Kitzhaber

Idaho Dispatch has been reaching out to parties involved in numerous issues across the state.

One of the biggest topics of discussion at the capitol this year is the issue of marijuana.

A proposal to constitutionally ban marijuana in all forms has already cleared the Idaho Senate. Several ballot initiatives are also underway to pass various forms of marijuana.

Additionally, Sgt. Jeremy Kitzhaber, a retired Air Force veteran is seeking to pass what he calls a “restrictive” medical marijuana bill in Idaho, House Bill 108.

Kitzhaber has a rare form of cancer that is in Stage 4 and says he takes numerous medications, including three opioids, to deal with pain and other issues as a result of his cancer treatment.

Kitzhaber’s bill is currently awaiting a public hearing in the House Health and Welfare Committee.

  1. I can see a need for medical marijuana but I have seen that so abused. Unfortunately once the medical portion of the door is opened it is an easy step to the other. I pray we come up with a reasonable solution to this issue.

  2. I also can see a need for medical marijuana. I do not see a right to penalize those people that are in the throngs of chemotherapy or disability because of a chance of abuse by some. Maybe give a certain percentage of disability that is able to use it? And maybe only during chemo? Restrictions are what needs to be addressed to make sure it doesn’t get abused. Board certified Physicians need to over see.

  3. It’s wrong to oppress the liberties and freedom of any adult to use cannabis as a source of medicine, therapy, happiness or joy.
    Prohibiting adult use for any reason is dominating and antisocial. It’s bad neighbor behavior. It’s hypocritical and full of fallacies. It’s primitive racist and ignorant of modern science and political history.

  4. This is a start but not good at all. We need a bill like the Idaho medical marijuana act of 2020. The IMMA IS MUCH BETTER FOR ALL. You should have there speaker on tour show to see both bill and let the people decide what they like. Please contact idaho citizens Coalition #idacann

  5. Why not let the voters decide ? Honestly those who don’t need it or have never had a loved one go thru pain have NO IDEA.

  6. The Sgt is a nice man dealing with a lot but his bill is smoke and mirrors. The Parmacies that he wants the weed to be distributed from are Dispensaries just like the ones in California and Oregon. Also local jurisdictions have zero local control over having a Dispensary in their town or county. The tax on this is a low 2%. The blister packages and low THC doses are not possible because they don’t exist and nobody wants to invest in creating them. Your Pharmacist will be a high budtender not a Pharmacist as the Sgt leads you to believe.

  7. Before the government began to outlaw marijuana, it was used by many of our citizens. The reason this happened was that the government couldn’t figure out how to get a piece of the action on a plant that anyone could plant and harvest. Marijuana was demonized in the 1936 government propaganda film “Reefer madness”. This type of government interference in it’s citizens personal choices is not in accordance with our declaration of independence, namely our right to “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”. If what I do does not infringe upon someone else’s rights, what right does the government have to outlaw my choice? It also states “That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness”.
    If we don’t like what our government is doing, it is up to us as citizens to make sure our voice is heard.
