Governor Little Signs SB 1110, Reclaim Idaho Promises Lawsuit

Several bills have garnered media attention across the state. Governor Brad Little recently vetoed two bills that limited his gubernatorial power.
Another bill that Little had on his desk was Senate Bill 1110 which would change the requirement for ballot initiative signature gathering from 18 legislative districts to 35 legislative districts.
On the final day of SB 1110 being on Little’s desk, he signed the bill into law.
The bill also contained an “emergency clause.” That means that rather than going into effect on July 1st of this year like most bills will, the bill will immediately become law.
Several organizations had already begun the process of gathering signatures for ballot initiatives on the 2022 general election ballot.
One of the organizations pushing for a ballot initiative next year is Reclaim Idaho. The group is pushing a ballot initiative reform effort and will have to abide by the new law that just passed.
However, the group says they are going to file a lawsuit over SB 1110 and will push to get it halted in the courts.

SB 1110 pass the House and the Senate with veto-proof majorities. In the Senate, two Republicans voted against the measure and five Republicans in the House voted against it.
A number of lawmakers posted on social media after Little’s signature, expressing their opposition to his signing of SB 1110.
One of the lawmakers who was pushing for Little to veto SB 1110 was House Minority Leader Ilana Rubel (D-Boise). Here is what she posted on Twitter after Little signed the bill:
However, Rep. Tammy Nichols (R-Middleton) posted in favor of SB 1110. Here is what Nichols posted on Facebook:

Ilana Rubel’s statement is backwards. This bill will allow more Idahoans to have a say in the laws that will affect them.
Absolutely, they can’t pick and choose anymore.
Look at who opposes the bill. One needs to Look no further for it’s vindication. The Medicare debacle shows how misguided the initiative process can be.
Having escaped the craziness of California politics I am well aware of the voter initiative process and how easy it is for powerful progressive forces from “outside” the state to put boots on the ground and muster support for legislation they favor. These forces are often the ones crafting the proposed legislation.
SB1110 will help protect Idahoans from the malicious intentions of progressive, non Idahoans how want to change our political, economic and educational landscape to their benefit and not the benefit of our citizens. It also denies the progressives in the larger population center the ability to ignore and overpower the wishes of those a in less populated areas of the state. This a template right out of the progressive California political playbook that will ultimately harm Idaho and its citizens.
As a political, economic and social refugee from California I want to thank Governor Little for getting this one right. Let’s all keep up the good fight here on the home front and retain the right all Idahoans to live in a state they can be proud of.
