Congressman Fulcher Stands Alone Among Idaho Delegation in Backing Bill for Veterans’ Gun Rights
By Greg Pruett • May 5, 2025Idaho Congressman Russ Fulcher is the only member of Idaho’s congressional delegation to support a bill protecting gun rights for veterans.
What’s Happening: Senate Bill 478 would prevent the Department of Veterans Affairs from confiscating firearms solely because the veteran has an appointed fiduciary. The bill has 18 co-sponsors in the Senate; however, Sen. Jim Risch (R) and Sen. Mike Crapo (R) are not listed as co-sponsors.
A House version of the bill (H.R. 1041) has 63 co-sponsors, of whom Fulcher is one. Fulcher is listed as a co-sponsor of the legislation. Rep. Mike Simpson (R) is not a co-sponsor.
Digging Deeper: Veterans have been fighting against gun confiscation on several fronts. Some veterans do not feel safe going to the VA if they are having mental issues because they fear the government will come after their guns, and it has happened before.
Gun control advocates say that someone who has an appointed fiduciary is not fit to own a firearm.
