Boise Mayor McLean Pulls Flag Designs After Universal Backlash
By Idaho Dispatch Staff • April 8, 2025Boise Mayor Lauren McLean announced Tuesday that the city will keep its current flag, just days after announcing four designs as finalists to replace the existing flag.
What’s Happening: Boise is backing away from replacing its current flag after residents of all political persuasions slammed the four proposed replacements. The artists behind four final designs will each receive a $1,000 award from the city. Many social media commenters dubbed the four proposed replacements as “socialist-looking.”
After announcing the decision Tuesday morning, the mayor’s office issued a statement explaining the move:
“I’ve weighed that feedback, and one thing is clear: Boiseans are passionate about our city, and our flag! I’ve decided that it isn’t the right time to move forward with a new flag. I’ve always said that being responsive to residents – listening and learning as I make decisions – is a key part of how I serve Boise.”
Digging Deeper: The Idaho Statesman, a left-wing publication usually in lockstep with McLean, called for her to end the contest this week. “But seriously, even if you defend McLean, you’ve got to admit the flags are not pretty,” wrote opinion editor and far-left voice Scott McIntosh. “I know I’m not alone on this one. The city is getting flamed on social media.”
Boise will keep the current flag for the time being.
