Attempt to Bring Grocery Tax Repeal Bill Out of House Committee Fails

By • February 8, 2022

Rep. Ron Nate (R-Rexburg) attempted to bring his bill (HB 448), a repeal of the state’s grocery tax, out of the House Ways and Means Committee today for a vote on the House Floor, but the attempt failed.

Nate attempted to use House Rule 17. HR 17 allows members of the House to try and bring a bill to the floor after the bill has been in committee for at least five days.

In his opening debate, Nate told the House that it was time for a vote on the Grocery Tax Repeal bill, and this was the opportunity for the legislature to move the bill to the floor. Rep. Paul Amador (R-Coeur d’Alene) stood and asked the body to keep the bill in committee.

Rep. Caroline Troy (R-Genesee) and Rep. Greg Chaney (R-Caldwell) both stood and debated in favor of the motion to hold the bill in committee. However, Chaney said that the vote on the motion would be used as a vote against the bill’s merits, which Chaney said was a lie.

Rep. Heather Scott (R-Blanchard), Rep. Karey Hanks (R-Saint Anthony), Rep. Ben Adams (R-Nampa), Rep. Tammy Nichols (R-Middleton), and Rep. Greg Ferch (R-Boise) all stood and debated in favor of bringing the bill to the House Floor.

Rep. John McCrostie (D-Boise) and Rep. Scott Syme (R-Caldwell) also stood and debated in favor of the motion to keep the bill in committee.

Nate rose a second time to debate and said the rule being used is a rule adopted by the House and that his effort on all bills is a genuine effort to help the citizens of Idaho. This comment after Chaney had said that personal bills are submitted, knowing that they will not go anywhere.

After the debate was closed, the House voted 49 to 20 to keep HB 448 in committee.

  1. It’s good when the Idaho’s Representative’s views and actions are clearly known.

We now know Paul Amador, Caroline Troy, Greg Chaney, John McCrostie, Scott Syme along with their ever feckless leader Scott Bedke vote against or are against the people’s will.

Primary them all out of office ASAP.

We thank Ron Nate etal for trying their best to support the will of The People.

  2. Why was no reason given for wanting to keep the bill kept in committee? It is abundantly clear that a huge majority of the PEOPLE of Idaho want the grocery tax to be repealed. I guess some of the elitists in the legislature just don’t want to let go of all that money.

  3. Dispatch, please investigate why the bill was kept in committee. Are there flaws in the bill that need to be corrected? It’s a no brainer that the people of Idaho want this bill, but we also want a sound, well-constructed bill.

  4. Seems like a very obvious question, “Why do the legislators want to keep this in committee?” Why is this a “secret?” Why didn’t you address the obvious?

  5. Scott Bedke doesn’t want this bill to pass because his opponent in the Lieutenant Governor race, Priscilla Giddings, has been trying to get grocery tax repealed since last year (maybe longer). If the bill passes then it will be seen as a victory for her.

Please report the Idaho Rinos to reportarino.com. This website is putting together a list of rinos to primary out. We need to let other Idahoans know the truth these rinos.

  6. Grocery taxes make everyone have skin in the gang. Property taxes put people out of their homes. Idaho’s politicians are as corrupt as Californias. But the moron Idahoans keep reelecting the criminals.
